Omaha, Nebraska - The microbiology laboratory at Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) recently underwent a renovation, evolving into a cutting-edge, safe and efficient space for students.

“The renovation of the microbiology lab was driven by the need to create a lab that mirrors a real-life hospital setting while promoting a high-level dynamic learning environment,” said Micaela Sharp, director of campus facilities.

The lab, which is located in the 501 Building on the NMC campus, was updated in fall 2024.

“Renovating the microbiology lab was essential to create an environment that supports innovative teaching practices. As advancements in technology and teaching strategies evolved, the previous setup no longer met the needs of students and faculty,” said Harsha Sharma, professor of natural and applied sciences. “The renovation aimed to provide a flexible, collaborative space aligned with the demands of today’s healthcare students.”

The lab was updated with new non-porous surfaces, optimized storage solutions, improved airflow and an efficient layout enhancing safety and organization.

Advanced technologies, including TV monitors at each workstation and a digital platform for lab manuals, have been added to enhance interactive and hands-on learning.

Infection control, a critical element in microbiology labs, was also prioritized, ensuring rigorous safety protocols.

“The upgrades focused on enhancing interactive learning, promoting collaboration and optimizing space for lab work. These improvements significantly upgraded both the physical space and lab technology,” Sharma said. “Now accommodating up to 16 students, the lab promotes better peer-to-peer interaction and fosters a more interactive learning environment.”

The renovated lab demonstrates a forward-thinking and innovative commitment to supporting modern teaching practices and improving student outcomes, providing an efficient learning environment and equipping future healthcare professionals with the resources they need.

“The renovations will enhance student learning by providing adaptable lab spaces equipped with the latest technology to encourage interaction and engagement. These upgrades help students develop practical skills for real-world applications while deepening their understanding of microbiology,” Sharma said.

“The new layout fosters collaboration, allowing students to work together, build communication skills, and strengthen teamwork—all essential for their future careers in healthcare. By integrating advanced technology, creating a safer environment and utilizing more student-centered learning approaches, the renovations reflect a commitment to providing a forward-thinking educational space.”

The updated lab allows faculty to provide hands-on experiences that build upon the foundational microbiology knowledge essential for students in the nursing, respiratory therapist and surgical technologist programs.

“These updates ensure the lab meets safety standards and better prepares students for clinical practice by simulating microbiology work in a healthcare environment,” Sharp said.
