Omaha, Nebraska - Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) received the African Immigrant Family Services (AIFS) Community Partnership award.
AIFS provides culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate services to help African immigrant and refugee families. They provide essential resources, help them navigate complex systems, and achieve economic and social integration into their new community.
NMC provides free health screenings, helping African immigrant and refugee communities access healthcare.
“Receiving the Community Partnership award from the African Immigrant Family Services organization is an incredible honor for NMC and the community engagement team,” said Alicia Whitehill, director of community engagement. “It reflects our shared commitment to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable populations, especially within immigrant communities.”
NMC has over 85 active community partners. Nursing and allied health students, supervised by staff and alumni, provide flu and COVID vaccines, diabetes and hypertension screenings, childhood lead screenings and more.
“Through our partnership with African Immigrant Family Services we had the opportunity to provide critical health screenings—ranging from diabetes and blood pressure checks to pediatric vision, hearing, lead and hemoglobin assessments,” Whitehill said. “These services are vital for early detection and prevention, and we are proud to contribute to the health of the African immigrant community in the Omaha-Metro area. This recognition fuels our continued dedication to accessible, compassionate care and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing the unique health challenges faced by underserved populations. We look forward to continuing our work together to ensure a healthier, more equitable future for all.”
NMC has been providing screenings in the community on the Mobile Diabetes Center since 2011.
“We are honored to recognize Nebraska Methodist College and the Mobile Diabetes Center for their invaluable partnership with African Immigrant Family Services. Nebraska Methodist College has been providing free health screenings to African immigrant and refugee communities, ensuring greater access to healthcare and wellness resources,” AIFS said when they recognized NMC. “NMC’s dedication to serving our community is making a lasting impact, and we are grateful for this collaborative effort to promote healthier lives.”
