Omaha, Nebraska - Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) received a $70,000 grant for new newborn and birthing simulators to expand pediatric and obstetric learning experiences.
The Innovative Approach Simulation Equipment Award, allocated by the State Legislature, is administered by the Nebraska Hospital Association and the Nebraska Center for Nursing.
“NMC is grateful for the grant as it allows us to further use technology in bridging the gap between theory and practice,” said Mindy Barna, dean of nursing. “This invaluable support will be used to advance our mission in providing educational experiences that prepare nursing students to excel and positively influence the health and well-being of the community.”
Jeremy Nordquist, president of the Nebraska Hospital Association, said workforce shortages remain the greatest challenge for Nebraska hospitals.
“This funding for nursing program simulation equipment is an important state investment in the development of our current and future healthcare workforce,” he said.
At NMC, the new simulators will enhance existing curricula, and be leveraged for student recruitment and ongoing professional enrichment.
Simulation sessions can be live-streamed statewide. This innovative approach attracts prospective nursing students from rural areas and offers supplementary training to practicing nurses unable to attend in-person sessions at the NMC campus.
NMC’s grant is part of $510,000 in grants awarded to Nebraska academic institutions.
