5 Myths About Accelerated Nursing Programs at NMC Explained

Written by Katie Meints, revised by Sara Giboney | Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2024

One of the most popular programs at Nebraska Methodist College (NMC) is the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, and it gets a lot of attention from people looking to switch careers or degree paths.

If you’re interested in making a career change to nursing, then the 12 month accelerated program might be right for you.

But before returning to college for nursing, you’ll want to know all the details about this rigorous program.

Below we’re debunking accelerated nursing myths to help you decide if you’re ready for this degree path.

1. Eligibility Myths: Can Anyone Apply for Accelerated Nursing?

One of the biggest nursing education misconceptions is the entry requirement.

The reason we can offer a BSN in just 12 months is because you have to have a degree in another field before applying.

If you’ve earned an associate or bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing field, you’ve likely gone through many of the arts and sciences courses that our traditional nursing students would complete over the course of four years.

So, when you enroll in the accelerated nursing program at NMC, you can focus all your attention on the core nursing courses that will enable you to succeed in a clinical setting.

2. Addressing Prerequisite Concerns for Accelerated BSN

When you’re looking over the prerequisites for accelerated nursing programs, you might find that there are required classes that you haven’t taken yet.

ABSN programs are set up so that applicants have time to complete those courses before they start. After you apply and get accepted, you should have ample time to find an appropriate course at a local college (or even at NMC) to get the credits you need to start the program.

NMC’s admissions team will help you find the classes you need to begin the accelerated nursing program. All you have to do is ask for a helping hand. After all, that’s what we’re here for.

3. Returning to School: Fitting In as an Adult Learner in Nursing

Some students are worried about going back to school as an adult learner who has already been to college.

There’s no need to worry. NMC goes out of its way to welcome transfer students. With a combination of first-time first year students, previous graduates and transfer students, NMC has a diverse age range that lets anyone feel right at home.

NMC even offers apartment-style housing for all of our on-campus students. With one- and two-bedroom options available, it’s a great choice for individuals, couples and families with kids.

The ABSN program is composed exclusively of people in the same boat as you. All of your classmates will have earned their degree and come back to college to pursue something they’re truly passionate about. You’re always a perfect fit at NMC.

4. The Reality of a 12-Month Intensive Nursing Program

Some ABSN students assume that the work expected of them during their 12 months at NMC will be just like any other college program. It’s important to know that the 12-month program is not the same as a four-year nursing program.

An accelerated nursing program is rigorous because you’re learning everything you need to know to be a nurse in one year. You’ll be on the same level as those who have had a four year education.

An ABSN program is not for the faint of heart, as you will be working diligently to complete coursework that will prepare you for the high-pressure world of nursing.

But accelerated nursing is not impossible for someone who has discovered their passion for nursing. Classes and assignments are tough, but are intentionally created to prepare you to be a skilled and confident nurse. One of your best resources will be your fellow students going through the program with you.

Our recent graduation rates and NCLEX pass rates show it can be done, especially with a team of like-minded individuals backing you up.

Understanding the Intensity of Accelerated Nursing Programs

Accelerated BSN experiences vary between students, but most students agree that the program is intense.

It’s recommended that students don’t work full- or part-time while enrolled in the ABSN program. The coursework is rigorous and will take up the same amount of time as a full-time job.

Clinical experiences make up multiple days of the week, and lectures, homework, studying and projects make up the rest of each week.

Time management in an accelerated nursing program will help you find balance between your personal and academic life.

5. Financial Aid Options for Second-Degree Nursing Students

Many prospective ABSN students are worried about the cost of a second degree.

They assume that because they already received scholarships and/or student loans through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), they won’t qualify again.

Luckily, you can still qualify for loans and financial aid. NMC also offers exclusive scholarships for ABSN students.
